Words from our Founder
Jok Madut Jok
Though the political situation in South Sudan is dire, the school continues to run mostly unaffected. Things are surely tough, with the fiscal crises, sky-high commodity prices, the insecurity emanating from the on-going conflict, people continue to try to run their lives as best they could. Their aspirations are no less basic and mundane than those of other human communities, which include public services in education, healthcare and safety. But government of South Sudan has been unable to extend these services to rural locations such as Marol, making this project a challenge.
The Kenyan teachers who teach the secondary school returned again this year. Six of teachers, including a newly married couple, came back and have brought assurances to the friends who support the secondary school. A new block of classrooms was completed this year, offering more space that has relieved the pressure that the secondary school had on the primary section.
The primary school enrollment this year stood at 850 pupils, a sign of the steady demand for classroom space at Marol from all the surrounding communities. The Secondary School enrolled 250 pupils.
Though there is still no community material support for the school, the reach of the school and the level of appreciation for it are almost country-wide. We hope that this will form the foundation of a truly national and diverse school in the future as the security situation improves. In this sense the school will very likely transcend ethnic divides and become a symbol of coexistence, at least that’s my dream.
Thank you for your continued support for this endeavor. The community at Marol and the surrounding villages will never be the same again, as the role of this project is offering the young people a real investment in their futures. We truly appreciate your support for South Sudan through this effort.
